The Flower Workshop, also a flower museum, is situated on Shing Hing Street in Central. Several factors influence the design of the building. Firstly, Shin Hing Street is a public staircase that leads from Gough Street up to Hollywood Road. Secondly, on the staircase, some trees shouldn’t be touched for environmental reasons. Finally, the site is between two buildings with restaurants and cafes. Building a structure along Shin Hing Street may obstruct views.Flower Workshop
In line with the concept of playing in a jungle gym, the whole structure is comprised of six bigger individual floor plates and seven smaller plates. All plates are situated at various heights that not only create a staircase to the roof garden but also display shelves for flowers.
I propose using thin steel members to create a sense of transparency that contrast against the typical concrete blocks surrounding the workshop. Steel members hold floor plates above pedestrians in order to respect pedestrian flow at ground level. The individual floor plates can be staggered around the existing trees to avoid damaging them. The space on the ground floor is enclosed in clear glass to retain a sense of transparency.
