Plastic Bottle Brick

My original material of choice was seashells. During my excursion to Brickyard Cove, Berkeley, in hopes of finding some on the beach, I realized that there is more plastic on the beach than shells. For this reason, I have gathered water bottles that were thrown away. This project is to test out cut bottles and sticking it together with soy wax to maybe reuse plastic bottles in the built environment.

Environmental Concern

Commercial bottles for drinking were first made out of glass. Only after the introduction of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in the 1970s, the common plastic bottle quickly become popular for its reliability and low production cost. Even among users, they prefer plastic over glass as it is lighter and unbreakable. There is an ongoing concern around plastic bottles, though, especially regarding health and the environment. In the United States, water bottles are inspected periodically by the FDA, as they have stated that those bottles may have some health risks. Disposing of these bottles is a huge problem, too. Plastic pollution in the ocean and at the shoreline is a global issue.
