Building That Grows
The lively streets of Wan Chai were explored, where different arts and cultures come together to create an exciting experience. We found beautiful art galleries, fascinating exhibitions, moving music performances, and impressive theatres and dance shows in this area. This a project that plans to establish a permanent place for these talented performing artists who use these fantastic facilities in Wan Chai.
The jigsaw puzzle is a concept model that explains the expansion strategy for the social housing project called ‘Life of an Artist’. As the name suggests, this social housing follows the artist throughout all the stages of their life, from single adult to family of four. The units of this housing can adapt to the user’s current state by expanding, like a puzzle.
In the beginning, the single adult only needs a standard unit without expansion, which leaves a void in the building. These voids will be utilized for social space. People can gather and hold performances there. It is also a space where the public and residents interact. Over time, when the single adult goes through the different stages of life and builds a family, expansion of the units will be necessary. As the units expand and the family grows bigger, there is less need for social space. So, Expansion will take the place of social space. When the time comes when the family members have grown up and moved out or passed away, the cycle begins again, and the unit size will be reduced, and the space will be given back to the social environment.
